Financial (Payroll) Secretary

The Medina Civil Service Commission announces an open competitive examination for the following position:

 FINANCIAL SECRETARY

MEDINA CITY SCHOOLS

 Starting Salary:       $21.61/hour Plus Benefits

 NATURE OF WORK

Will perform payroll functions for the Medina City Schools’ Treasurer Office.  Duties include performing financial/payroll data collection, verification, calculation, input and retrieval in order to timely process payroll while maintaining accurate financial, benefit and payroll records.  Responsible for completing fiscal and calendar year-end procedures, along with training and advising various secretaries on payroll and accounting procedures.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent.  Strongly prefer an Associate’s degree in accounting or finance, with 2-5 years related work experience.  Strong computer skills with accurate data entry. Ability to maintain records, prepare reports, make mathematical computations, assemble data and dispense information, follow written and verbal instructions. Able to get along with and work closely with others.  Physical and mental ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

 NATURE OF EXAMINATION

Written examination will test for knowledge of filing, editing, general office practices, reading comprehension, and accurate mathematical calculation.  A passing score of 70% or above must be attained to be ranked on a provisional eligible list..  APPLICANTS MAY BRING HAND CALCULATORS FOR USE ON THE WRITTEN EXAM. 

Supplemental computer testing will be administered to get an idea of skill level and accuracy.  Three test subjects to be given are Data Entry (97ckpm w/95% accuracy), 10-Key (133ckpm w/95% accuracy) and Microsoft Excel (60% or better).

 VETERANS PREFERENCE

Any veteran of the U. S. Armed Forces who has been honorably discharged within the past ten years and who passes the examination may receive additional credit provided proof of honorable discharge (DD-214) is presented and verified prior to the written examination date.

 PROBATION

All persons appointed to permanent positions are subject to a probationary period.  The probationary period is an essential part of the examination process used for the effective adjustment of the employee and the elimination of any probationer whose performance fails to meet the required standards of work.
